When I joined the project, there were only two established characters: four identical wizards, and a frost dragon. The team already liked the idea of the wizards having large hats, so that was my only limitation. With the wizard, I wanted to create a character that was easy to read, and both worked as a believable creature and as a fantasy character. It was also a hope at one point to naturally incorporate as much of the user interface as possible. With this in mind, I came up with the idea of the cape replacing one arm. It was the intention that the cape could fill and empty with color as the health bar, and though that idea was eventually cut, the asymmetrical design and added flair adds to the mystery and fun of the design.
